I can help put more money into your clients’ pockets and save you some headaches. Prior to opening my practice in Charleston, I worked for a company that collected money from health insurance companies, workers compensation carriers, and government payers for hospitals. I have been doing this sort of work for ten years and have become familiar with medical provider billing procedures and the language that medical providers and insurance companies use to communicate. See my case summary page for more details about this. Recently, I learned that these skills would benefits my fellow attorneys who do personal injury work and below is part of that story.
I was helping a local attorney with a case. His client was injured in a car accident. She was treated by two hospitals. She owed one hospital $10,000.00 and another hospital $12,000.00. I immediately saw that this young lady may have had coverage with BlueCross Blue Shield South Carolina (BCBS SC). However, BCBS SC paid neither hospital. I guessed it was because the hospitals did not have a correct insurance identification number. Often this is the case in emergency admissions, because when someone comes into the hospital seriously injured, providing accurate insurance information is not at the top of the list. Several factors precluded me from obtaining a correct insurance ID number from the client directly so I reached into my bag of tricks.
At some time in my ten years of experience, I developed a relationship with the BCBS SC legal department. I got in touch with my contacts there and learned the correct insurance ID number and that the client needed to provide some information to BCBS SC. I provided each hospital with the correct insurance ID number and BCBS SC with the information that they needed. The process took three months and BCBS SC recently paid these claims. The client was left with copayments totaling $2,000.00 and about $11,000.00 to reimburse BCBS SC.
After my contingent fee is taken out, my involvement put another $7,000.00 in to this client’s pocket. While I cannot guarantee this sort of outcome in every case, I can promise you that I will relieve you of the burden of trying to work through the morass of our current health care system.
